HISTORY
NERD Bioscience Corp. (NBC) derives her name from the pure scientific meeting club, New England RNA Data (NERD) Club, which is hosted at Harvard Medical School Quad Building Cannon Room every month to gather academic and industrial scientists in greater Boston area to communicate their latest research and socialize. The founder of NBC is also the president of NERD Club, in charge of meeting organization and industry sponsors communication. He values NBC as the first offspring ever incubated from NERD Club, and inherited the last name of "NERD" from the Club.
FOUNDER
Shenghua Duan (Eddy) is a native Chinese, born in Hunan province of China. He was well educated in Changsha city, the capital of Hunan before he moved to Guangzhou to pursue his undergraduate study in polymer chemistry at Sun Yat-sen University. After his master study in bioinorganic chemistry, he came to USA in 2001 to pursue his PhD study in biophysical chemistry at University of Rochester. Inspired by his hometown fellows great entrepreneurship spirit, he joined a small biotech startup company in Maryland immediately after he got PhD degree. Later he joined the lab of Nobel Prize winner at University of Massachusetts Medical School to start up a whole new project, utilizing latest genome sequencing technology in molecular medicine research. After his postdoc work at UMMS with Craig Mello, he moved to Harvard University Dana Farber Cancer Institute to work on cancer genomics and computational biology, consulting for research investigators and clinical doctors by analyzing their high throughput data, experiment design and clinical phenotype. Two years later, he went back to China to stay with his mom for half a year due to her suffering diabetes problem. Besides consulting for her mom's health, he got lots of requests for help from friends of family about their cancer disease, which is pandemic in China. He came back to Boston and started up NERD Bioscience Corp. (NBC), which targets improving personal health by utilizing American advanced academic research and industry technologies. He believes that combining the knowledge in chemistry, biology, medicine and utilizing the right informatics tools, he could improve person such as his mom's health.
